OCZ Summit 2006 APAC - Memory, Motherboards and More Overclocking Goodness

OverClockerZ in APAC

It wasn't a giant trade bazaar like Computex nor was it the geeky tech heaven of an Intel Developer Forum, but the recent and very first OCZ Summit 2006 APAC convention held in Taipei gave us a glimpse of what's brewing for the enthusiast and overclocking scene in the upcoming year. OCZ Technology (OCZ) might be well known in the US and Europe markets, but they are now bullish into making a presence in Asia Pacific as well. While the summit was basically an announcement to that effect; letting the region know they’ve setup headquarters here in Taiwan, it was still an enthusiast event with a fair bit of overclocking demonstrations and we managed to get some sneak peeks at working samples of upcoming products from OCZ as well as their system partners like ASUS and Gigabyte.

The entry of OCZ into the APAC region should be quite an exciting prospect for hardcore enthusiasts with custom overclocking-friendly products, support and warranty. The was actually quite a turn out at the Summit to voice support for OCZ and these included Universal abit, ASUS, SiS, Shuttle, Gigabyte, Biostar, Albatron, DFI. From what we’ve seen so far, many new performance products are being designed around promoting overclocking as a general hobby and for a company whose brand is basically an abbreviation of ‘OverClockerZ’, you can be sure of some serious competition in 2007 in the memory and cooling market.

Here are the highlights of the good things to come.

Memory Overclocking

The OCZ FlexXLC hybrid air/water-cooled memory has already been launched, but we were given a live demonstration of its overclocking capabilities. Using regular air cooling, the FlexXLC breaches the 1300MHz mark at 5-5-5-18, 2.5V with an unreleased ASUS board. According to OCZ, their own lab run hit 1400MHz, also with air cooling only.

A closer look. Impressive indeed for overclocking fanatics.

Another setup using a 2GB pair with regular air cooling to demonstrate OCZ overclocking advantage. The motherboard you see in both systems is an unreleased ASUS sample - also built especially for overclocking.

OCZ managed to hit 1304MHz for a dual channel DDR2 machine using air cooled FlexXLC memory. At 2.5Vs, the DIMMs were only slightly warm.

More specialty products like these performance DIMMs qualified for ATI CrossFire or NVIDIA SLI Memory (EPP) systems are what to expect from OCZ.

Enthusiast Cooling

A brand new water cooling block code-named SilverArray will be introduced very soon as well. OCZ also plans to deliver a more portable (well, as portable as can be anyway) and affordable D.I.Y. phase-change unit to the masses.

Early sample of the SilverArray waterblock has a pure copper plate with embedded silver rods that have direct contact with water flow. Comes in standard 1/2-inch or 3/8-inch barbs.

A New Entry in to the Graphics Market

The most interesting announcement at the summit was OCZ's entry into the already crowded graphics card market. No details, specifications or samples were shown except for the inaugural box shot below, but we were told to look forward to the upcoming CES 2007.

Supposed box art the new OCZ venture into the world of graphics cards. Look out for CES, because OCZ claims that the card will be like no other.
