Our first benchmark has been around for a while, but as a gauge of a CPU's peak integer and floating point performance, it still has its uses. The Sandy Bridge processors are a cut above the previous generation here, including Intel's Extreme Edition processors, if you take the peak results. Once we started adding more threads, the 6-core Core i7-980X managed to regain some respectability by beating the Core i7-2600K at 8-users. However, it was still a surprise to find Intel's new mainstream processors edging out its former top dog.
