HTC goes official with its first 3D capable smartphone, the HTC Evo 3D. The Evo 3D comes with a 4.3-inch qHD display. Its unique proposition stems from its ability to display 3D content without the use of 3D glasses. However, there is a limit to the viewing angle, which we've mentioned when we had a hands-on with a similar 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D. To fully utilize its 3D display, the Evo 3D comes with two 5-megapixel cameras that captures 3D images, with 720p video recording supported. However, 3D images will have its resolution limited up to 2-megapixels.
Loaded with Google Android 2.3, the latest entry in the HTC family sports the same dual-core 1.2GHz processor that made its first appearance on the earlier HTC Sensation. More importantly, the Evo 3D gets a bump up in RAM, sporting 1GB worth of memory for multi-tasking puposes. Other features that enhances the overall experience includes DLNA capabilities to wirelessly connect the Evo 3D to DLNA-enabled TVs or devices. Alternatively, users can opt for the HDMI-out to further expand the Evo 3D's content onto a larger screen.
Content plays a huge role in the Evo 3D, with HTC's video service, HTC Watch, soon to be fully operational. The service offers up movie rentals, which will become digitally available on the same day it's offered in the region. Customers can choose to rent or purchase the movies. According to HTC, rentals have a 24-hour or 48-hour expiry from the moment the movie is played. HTC Watch will also include 3D movies, and movies such as The Green Hornet will be preloaded onto the Evo 3D.
HTC Watch will be available from September onwards, with pricing details to be announced at a later date.
Movies aside, games are also included in the package such as Need for Speed Shift, The Sims 3 and Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD. Given how the Evo 3D will be heavily loaded with its various multimedia features, it's a relief to see that the device will be powered by a 1730mAh battery. Its stamina shall be duly tested once the review unit makes its way into our labs.
HTC has also teamed up with Chalkboard, a location-based service that highlights a catalogue of local offers. The service was first introduced in Malaysia, with Singapore following up. According to Lichi Wu, Director of Business Development for Chalkboard, there are plans to further its presence in the south-east Asia region. The Evo 3D will be the first of HTC's devices to be preloaded with the Chalkboard service and widget. The service is aimed at small and medium business enterprises, though larger enterprises such as Carrefour have also joined the service. These vendors are ultimately seeking a platform to bring their product offers to consumers. Chalkboard creates that specific channel, through the Evo 3D's GPS system, allowing consumers to lock onto offers within the vicinity.
The HTC EVO 3D will be available at all mobile operators and authorized retailers for a suggested retail price of S$895 in end August 2011.
