HP Pushes Strongly into Mobility Space

HP's Big Focus on Mobility

Already in its third successive year, the HP Mobility Summit 2007 held in Shanghai, China, saw the launch of more than a dozen notebook computers and a couple of consumer handhelds. The landmark event was the first time HP had assembled a global product launch in Asia Pacific to reinforce the company's mission: connect people to information and entertainment, wherever they may be. Choosing the county that is not only the host of Olympics 2008 but also the fastest growing economy in the world (and in Asia Pacific) underlines the strategic importance of this part of the world to HP, most notably in terms of market share and revenue contributions.

Other proceedings no less important than the gleaming notebooks and handhelds were products and services about mobile device management software, mobile messaging and collaboration services, and 3G mobile video solutions, including messaging and mobile blogging services. Of these agendas, HP's new "mscape", a prototype software suite and website that overlays digital sight, sounds and interactions on the physical world to create immersive and interactive experiences, is perhaps the most intriguing to general consumers. A formal trial of this beta application was carried out by journalists to the HP Mobility Summit 2007 via HP's iPaq Travel Companion rx5700 which, apart from a few hiccups with GPS signal acquisition and strength, was a successful demonstration of what "mscape" can offer in time to come - more about "mscape" in a bit.

Todd Bradly, Executive Vice President, Personal Systems Group, HP, giving his opening address.

"Rather than simply enabling products with wireless connectivity, HP is helping customers make connections to the people and information that is important to them," said Todd Bradly, Executive Vice President, Personal Systems Group, HP. "These connections increasingly include rich digital media such as full motion video, graphics and voice for a real-time interactive experience, and HP is providing the devices, services and IT infrastructure to make this happen."
