CES Unveiled - Quick Peeks

Quick Peeks

Before the main event officially begins on 6 January, we had a chance to check out the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Unveiled event held at the Venetian here in Vegas. It's not really the actual show itself, but the room was already packed with hundreds of journalists and vendors showing some new and interesting products.

Here's a quick look at some of the more interesting ones and do remember to check back in tomorrow for our coverage of the main event. Going by the hints of what we saw, expect to see tablets, tablets and more tablets. Also, 3DTVs aren't quite the dead horse to beat yet, as we saw one impressive looking new model being demoed.

Mitsubishi Electric's 92-inch 3D TV joins the ranks of its other large size televisions and is planned to be sold for US$6000 once it's ready for retail. The unit seen here is actually a prototype demo unit.

Samsung has a 55-inch 2-sided edge-lit LED TV on display that's really, really, thin. Like 10.8mm thin. What 2-sided edge lit means that the only lighting that lights up the TV is from the left and ride sides. As it's not a direct-lit backlight, it also means that it doesn't use as much power.

Motion Computing's tablet is made to be rugged and tough and sports Gorilla Glass for its 10.1-inch screen, making it a device that's probably quite hard to damage by normal usage.

Also spotted at Sandisk's booth is this HP Slate that's uses Sandisk's SSDs. We are yet to see the Slate appear in Singapore and the local regions, so if you're lusting after one, good luck.

Lenovo also showed off a demo unit of the LePad, which uses an OS that's based on Android Froyo (2.2) but not running Froyo. The UI seemed pretty smooth, and you could run Android apps like Angry Birds on it. Appearance wise it looks quite close to the Apple iPad, especially since it has a similar Home button that's located to where Apple's Home button would be if the LePad were an iPad.

AMD was also present and basically demoed netbooks equipped with the Brazos platform. They looked quite capable of playing games on their own without a need for discrete graphics, which is always a good thing.

Announced just last week, the Samsung NX11 will probably make its way into your wallets. Looks wise, it shares much with the previous model and features inter-changeable lenses too.
