Highlights from CeBIT 2012 Trade Show

While some of you were busy shopping at our local IT Show over the weekend, there was another major tech event which took place halfway across the world on a much bigger scale. Located in Hannover, Germany, CeBIT is a yearly trade fair established since 1986, where new and upcoming developments in the Information Technology sectors are showcased. According to CeBIT's official site, the event attracted more than 20,000 attendees and over 30,000 video-on-demand viewers. Here are highlights from one of the world's largest trade IT shows, which took place from the 6th to the 10th of March 2012 over in Deutschland. Do have a peek at some of these cool and upcoming gizmos, which includes an eclectic mix of desktop components, systems, and gaming peripherals.

Computing Systems

In the desktop arena, we spied three new mini PCs unveiled by Zotac, a Hong Kong-based PC hardware firm more popularly known for their small form factor systems and motherboards. Based on multiple platforms (from Intel to AMD), the three models announced are - the ZBOX ID82, ZBOX nano ID61, and ZBOX Blu-ray AD05. Judging by their features, it doesn't take much to figure out that Zotac has taken aim at high-definition media playback with their latest offerings. The ZBOX ID82 is powered by an Intel Core i3 2330M processor with a HDMI 1.4a output and 3D Blu-ray support. The tinier ZBOX nano ID61, on the other hand, will be powered by a VIA Nano X2 U4025 dual-core workhorse and Chrome9 HCM GPU with accelerated Internet streaming and Blu-ray decoding perks. As it name suggests, the ZBOX Blu-ray AD05 (shown above) is an ultra-sleek media and computing solution driven by an AMD E-450 APU platform, designed to tackle high-definition video streams and Blu-ray playback. All three ZBOXes are also available as customizable barebones platforms with room to accommodate an SSD or 2.5-inch SATA hard drive.

It's not quite a PC, but PiQx Imaging also unveiled the handy XCAN 1 in Hannover. Fundamentally, the camera-based document scanner is able to scan up to an A4 page simply by capturing the image of the document placed under its camera. No muss, no fuss! Interestingly, you can also stretch the document with your fingers (if the document isn't flat) and the software would automatically remove the fingers from the image. Meant to be attached to the back of a laptop, the XCAN1 has an image quality comparable to a conventional scan of 300dpi.

Motherboards

CeBIT also played host to a number of prominent motherboard announcements from major brand names such as MSI and Gigabyte, revolving around support for Intel's 3rd-generation Ivy Bridge processors. Take MSI for instance, who showed up with a number of boards equipped with Intel's 7-series chipsets as well as Intel's 22nm CPU and PCI Express Gen3-friendly specifications. Motherboards from MSI equipped with Intel's Z77 chipset include: the Z77A-GD80, Z77A-GD65, Z77A-GD55, Z77A-G45, and Z77MA-G45. Gigabyte wasn't to be outdone either, judging by their G1 Sniper 3 board tuned for gamers (or over-clockers) and the Z77X-U55H with Wi-Fi support. Some noteworthy features include Gigabyte's All Digital Engine, Gigabyte 3D BIOS, and Gigabyte Ultra Durable 4 technologies. Best of all, all Ultra Durable boards will be bundled with an exclusive PCIe expansion card with Bluetooth 4.0 (Smart Ready) and dual-band 300Mbps Wi-Fi connectivity. Biostar's answer to the Z77 chipsets include the TZ77XE4 series, which features a DisplayPort on top of more traditional HDMI and DVI outlets. ASRock has an AMD motherboard to show at CeBIT  as well - the A75 Pro4/MVP with Lucid Virtu Universal MVP technology (GPU virtualization software for faster system response).

Gaming Systems and Accessories

Some of you might not know of the brand Roccat, but gamers would undoubtedly be familiar with the Roccat Kone which boasts of its own TurboCore brains and on-board memory. Roccat was at CeBIT this year as well with two major announcements - the Roccat Power Grid and Savu Mid-Size Hybrid Gaming Mouse. Esentially, the Power Grid app is capable of turning a smartphone into a gamer's weapon of choice. More precisely, the app enables gamers to route external voice and text communications from Facebook or TeamSpeak to the smartphone. It also allows gamers to monitor their computer's vital data, tailor their audio settings, and execute customized gaming commands. Another interesting announcement came from Thermaltake & DesignworksUSA. As a follow-up to Thermaltake's Level 10 gaming PC housing, the swanky Level 10 M Gaming mouse features an open frame which enables air and light to traverse through the product. The futuristic mouse is also constructed with a solid aluminum base commonly deployed in the aerospace industry.
