Photography has always been part of the smartphone experience - and so have apps. In the Android market, there are a handful of photography-related apps that help enhance the photo-taking process, be it adding zany effects or dreamy lo-fi filters.  Here, we highlight our top 5 favorite shutter-friendly apps for the Android smartphone user.

This simple-to-use camera app adds variety to the usually drab pictures with a choice selection of ToyCam filters, Polaroid, Warhol and Fisheye effects. Once you are done, you can easily share these photos through social media channels like Whatsapp, TweetDeck and Facebook. Simply select your favorite filter through the main menu and click the camera icon to work its magic. Basic options for tweaking include customizing your picture size as well, from Large (960 x 640) to Square (580 x 580).

A huge fan of lomography? Well, think of the Retro Camera app as a tool to transform your smartphone to a 5-in-1 digital toy camera. The quaintly designed app comes with five camera effects that will add a lo-fi, analog touch to your pictures. Not only that, the app emulates the lomography experience as closely as digital can possibly do.

Vignette

The Vignette app is slightly more complicated to use, but you will soon find that the trouble is well worth the while since it has 68 effects and 56 frames, out of which includes cross-processing, double exposure and tilt-shift. The real juice is where the effects and frames are at. You can personalize your photo through selecting specific settings or you can settle for a preset under the Favorites Tab. The interface is pretty straightforward if you know your basic camera parameters well. The best thing is that you can easily place a shortcut on your home screen that fires up the camera immediately with your favorite settings. If you looking to test the waters first, you can download a free version called Vignette Demo.

PhotoFunia promises fun, and it sure delivers a fun way to play with your photos. Reserved for the hardiest of pranksters, the app comes with over 200 zany and artistic effects, allowing you to “integrate” a hilarious Wanted Dead or Alive poster or a magazine cover with a friend’s photo. The team adds new effects every week so expect the already large library of choices to grow even bigger. On the downside, the app requires a working Internet connection to work. But as the adage goes, laughter is the best medicine so consider it a fair trade-off!
