Android Pay launches in Singapore today!

Android Pay launches islandwide today, making Singapore the third country with Android Pay after the US and UK. The service is compatible with any Android device with NFC-enabled, running on Android 4.4 KitKat or higher and works with MasterCard and Visa cards from DBS, OCBC, POSB, Standard Chartered and UOB.

How do you get Android Pay?

Download the Android Pay app from the Play Store on your NFC-enabled smartphone running on Android 4.4 KitKat or higher. To add a debit or credit card, open the app, and press the + sign in the bottom right corner. Select Add a credit or debit card. Then use the camera to capture your card info or alternatively, enter it manually. You can also add gift cards and loyalty cards to the Android Pay app.

Android Wear smartwatches do not currently support Android Pay.

Where can you use Android Pay?

Android Pay is available anywhere you can find a contactless payment terminal. Some shops may also display a little Android logo on the terminal.

To celebrate the launch of Android Pay a few retailers will also be offering special promotions when you pay with Android Pay:

McCafe: Get $2 off purchase ($6 minimum) when you pay with Android Pay. All hot beverages will be topped with Android cocoa art (7 July - 3 August)

Toast Box: Get a Traditional Kaya Toast or a Golden Lava French Toast + small kopi / teh for only $2 when you pay with Android Pay (1-31 July)

BreadTalk: Get $2 off with minimum $3 purchase (1-31 July)

Cold Storage, Jasons, MarketPlace: Get a free eco bag when you pay with Android Pay. (starting 26th September while stocks last)

Later this year, Google will be adding in-app support for Android Pay, which will let you checkout faster when mobile shopping. Deliveroo, Grab, Shopee, Singapore Airlines, Zalora and Uber are already confirmed as apps that will support Android Pay.

How do you use Android Pay?

To pay with Android Pay just wake your phone and hold it over the contactless pay terminal.

One thing to note is that, unlike Apple and Samsung Pay, which require your fingerprint for every purchase made, Android Pay doesn't actually require you to unlock your phone to make a purchase (so if you lose your phone, be sure to cancel your cards immediately). As a security measure, after making three purchases, you will need to unlock your phone to make a fourth purchase.

What happens if you have both Android Pay and Samsung Pay?

If you register a credit card with both Android Pay and Samsung Pay, your phone will ask you to choose which pay service you want to use as your default option.
