7 frequently asked questions about the Samsung Galaxy Note7

Note: This article was first published on 3rd August 2016.

We’ve been seeing lots of feedback about the new stylus-based flagship smartphone by Samsung. We have some input, and this should address some burning questions before you make the purchase.

Is the iris scanner any good, with glasses worn or otherwise?

The short answer is yes – it’s fast and it works as intended for the naked eye or bespectacled folks. However, it’s challenged by a few things: people with smaller eyes, excessively dark sunglasses, and colored contact lenses. The option to unlock the device using your fingerprint still remains, so no real loss there.

Does the Note7 (and the S Pen) work under water?

The phone and the stylus technically do work when they are in the water, but we don’t recommend using the Note7 to stir your hotpot soup base. While the Note7 is rated at IP68 (a first for their Note line-up), it doesn’t mean that the device is invincible.

What’s the network support for the Note7’s dual-SIM feature?

There’s a software-based upgrade planned for Q4 2016 that will allow 4G/3G support. Currently, the dual-SIM works in a 4G/2G configuration.

Must I absolutely switch to USB Type-C cables for the Note7?

Yes, and that’s not a bad thing because Note7’s USB Type-C port uses the Gen 3.1 standard. However, the USB Type-C cable provided in the box isn’t the Gen 3.1 standard, so users will have to purchase one separately. If you’re worrying about your old cables becoming obsolete – don’t. The Note7’s box includes a USB Type-C adapter for your old micro-USB cables.

What happened to Note 6?

It didn’t happen. Samsung skipped a number for the name so that the Note stylus-smartphones are in line with their flagship range – the Galaxy S series. The Samsung Galaxy Note7 is effectively the successor to the Galaxy Note 5.

Is the Note7 rear camera identical to the one found on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge?

According to Samsung Singapore, the "camera is the same as S7 and S7 Edge" – so, yes, it is. To recap, the Note7 gets a 12-megapixel, f/1.7, 1/2.6-inch sensor with phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilisation, while on the front, there's a 5-megapixel f/1.7 selfie camera. Forgot how well it performs? Check out this detailed article.

Isn’t there a Blue Coral color option for the Note7?

There is, but Samsung Singapore cannot tell us when it will come (or if it is at all) to Singapore. We’re stuck with Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, and Silver Titanium for now.
