1. Intro:
Being a Singaporean, I'm really proud that Creative has improved on the legendary Aurvana Live! to release this latest update. The Creative Aurvana Live! 2 (CAL2) uses the same 40mm Bio-Cellulous with an updated build while still delivering great sound quality at an affordable price point.

2. Design, Build and Comfort:
Most of the materials used are light-weight plastics. The adjustable metal headband is covered by good quality and comfortable pleather. The earcups are able to swivel outwards which allows the CAL2 to be stored flat if needed. Size wise, the CAL2 is rather compact for a full-sized closed headphone which contributes to its portability. The stock pleather pads are roomy enough to cover my normal sized ears and also has soft form which makes the CAL2 very comfortable to wear for extended listening sessions. Clapping pressure is on the lighter side which enhances comfort but doesn't provide the best isolation.

3. Packaging
The CAL2 comes stored in a good quality box which includes, a soft drawstring carrying case, detachable flat cable with mobile phone remote and mic, and the usual paperwork. Do remember to check that the volume on your remote is adjusted correctly when first plugging in as I thought something was wrong when it was very soft initially. The CAL2 comes in black and red, and I chose the red version since I thought it would be nice to have a dash of colour compared to the usual black and silver we see in most audio equipment. Just to note that the red has a metallic mirror finish to it so it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

4. Sound Quality
As my hearing impressions are purely subjective, YMMV. The CAL2 on its stock pleather pads has a rather V-shaped sound with good clarity in the treble, smooth mid-range and emphasised bass. There is good bass quantity while quality is tight enough to avoid being overly boomy. Although not the most neutral sounding for sure, this works really well for modern pop and electronic genres. I've tried some aftermarket velour earpads which opens up the soundstage slightly and lowers the bass quantity somewhat. The CAL2 is also easy to drive at 32ohms and forgiving with compressed music formats across different genres. I've listened to them on my Samsung Note 2 with plenty of volume headroom. Also used it with my Fiio E10 and Schiit Magni Amp + ODAC combo, which improves clarity slightly.

5. Conclusion
For its current retail price of under SGD150, I think this is pretty serious value considering the design, built quality, comfort and most importantly sound quality of this rather under-the-radar product from our very own shores. Kudos to Creative for delivery this budget friendly gem and to show us that good sound doesn't necessarily mean spending big money. Thanks for reading!
