MediaTek today announced the MT8173 platform, the world's first tablet system-on-chip (SoC) with an ARM Cortex-A72 processor at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015.
At MWC today, Intel announced a new family of mobile Atom chips that will come in three tiers, x3, x5 and x7, similar to the naming standard used by Intel's high-end Core processors. Expect to see the X3 family of chips in entry-level mobile devices, while the x5 and x7 will power mainstream and premium tablets and 2-in-1s.
At MWC 2015, Qualcomm is introducing new LTE-U chips with technology that will make use of the unlicensed 5GHz spectrum currently in use by Wi-Fi networks. The idea is for carriers to install many small LTE-U cells in public locations, which would end up boosting the signal of their big towers that work on the licensed spectrum.
