Thermaltake has announced the Toughpower SFX Gold series of PSUs, a new line of SFX units targeted at small form factor systems. As the name suggests, the new PSUs are rated 80 Plus Gold, and are available in 450 watt and 600 watt models.

Both units are fully modular, and utilize flat cables to improve airflow. They also feature Japanese-made capacitors and a single +12V rail, all of which are backed by an impressive seven-year warranty.

The only caveat is that cooling capacity probably isn’t as good as it could have been. The Toughpower SFX Gold PSUs use a relatively small 80mm fan, but they might have been better served by a larger 92mm one that would be able to provide increased airflow and lower speeds, and would thus be quieter. Furthermore, SFX PSUs generally feature a more cramped component layout, which means there’s usually no room for larger heatsinks to help with heat dissipation.

With that said, the fan does support a semi-passive mode (it’s active up to 10 percent load only, still shorter than ATX PSUs), so noise at light loads will still be kept down somewhat. According to Thermaltake, the fan makes less than 30dB of noise in worst case scenarios.

Nevertheless, system builders looking to put together small form factor systems will welcome the new Thermaltake PSUs. The 600 watt unit is sufficient to power a high-end rig, and even the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 only has a recommended system power of 500 watts.
