The new Porsche Panemera is finally cool, thanks to wings that split and extend

Porsche's Panamera has always been widely regarded as the best large luxury sports saloon to drive. The biggest problem, however, is that it looked kind of lumpy and uninspired.

Fortunately, Porsche has sorted that out with its all-new Panamera. The latest Panamera looks sleeker and more purposeful, thanks to a reworked front facade, shorter front overhangs, a lower roof, and a longer wheelbase.

The Panamera's interior has been updated too with loads more displays. In front of the driver sits a single large rev counter flanked by two high-resolution digital displays that can be customized to show different information, such as tire pressure and even navigation.

And to the right on the center console sits a large 12.3-inch touchscreen display featuring Porsche's new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) interface. It sounds and looks thoroughly modern.

The Panamera will be available in three trims: two petrol versions and a diesel version. The entry-level model is the Panamera 4S, which is powered by a 2.9-liter twin turbo V6. Power output is 434hp and 550nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100km/h time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 289km/h.

The top-of-the-line petrol model is the Panamera Turbo, which features a 4-liter twin turbo V8 that pumps out 550hp and a staggering 770nm of torque. This propels the Turbo from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and onto a top speed of 306km/h.

Interestingly, the Panamera Turbo's V8 also features cylinder deactivation to help improve mileage and reduce emissions. This means that the engine can shutdown half of its cylinders during times when power isn't imperative, such as during highway cruising.

But coolest feature of all has got to be the rear wing that extends at speeds and even splits. It looks like something straight out of Iron Man.

Finally, for those who are more concerned about mileage and efficiency, there's the Panamera 4S Diesel. It a 4-liter twin turbo V8 diesel powerplant that is good for 422hp and a simply insane 850nm of torque. This means it can dispatch 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 285km/h, which is pretty impressive for a diesel car and makes you think twice about getting a petrol Panamera.
