What happens when the world’s largest PC manufacturer teams up with one of the most recognizable brands in gaming peripherals? A Razer Edition Lenovo Y series gaming desktop as it turns out. Slated to be launched at CES 2016, the new desktop is the first product of a partnership announced over the weekend at DreamHack Winter 2015 between the two companies to build an entire new range of gaming PCs.

Lenovo first unveiled its Y series desktops at IFA in September, and the new Razer Edition tower PC actually looks fairly similar, save for some Razer-esque aesthetic flourishes.

The formerly red Y series logo now sports the familiar green Razer glow, and LED lighting has been added to the bottom of the case as well, not unlike the Razer versions of the NZXT Source 340 and H440.

However, Razer has opted for Chroma lighting at the bottom this time around, which means that users can sync the lighting with Razer’s growing selection of Chroma devices. We don’t yet know if the software solution for this will be Razer Synapse or some custom version of it.

This partnership is about more than just slapping on some new Razer-style design changes though, and Lenovo is looking to capitalize on Razer’s software expertise as well with products like Razer Synapse and Cortex. Still, it remains to be seen if these software solutions will be bundled with future Lenovo gaming PCs or if the two companies will work together to design something new.

In fact, both Razer and Lenovo stand to gain quite a lot from this partnership. The gaming peripherals manufacturer is favored primarily by enthusiasts and gamers, and Lenovo’s reach among more mainstream users could help Razer reach more consumers. Similarly, Lenovo could boost its appeal among gamers with its Razer Edition products.

In a declining PC market, gaming is an area of the PC market that is still growing, said Victor Rios, Lenovo’s vice president and general manager for workstation and gaming computers. Lenovo’s partnership with Razer is thus part of its bet that more focus on the gaming PC market can help drive renewed sales, shore up profit margins, and possibly make up for the slump in other areas.

Both companies will also reportedly attempt to capitalize on virtual reality (which requires fairly demanding hardware to run) as a way to entice casual consumers to buy into the high-end PC market.

However, Razer Edition PCs are just the beginning, and the two companies have plans to expand their collaboration to more products and even explore cross-selling opportunities in the near future.
