ASUS has announced the ROG Swift PG248Q, a 24-inch gaming monitor that supports gaming-oriented features like ultra-high refresh rates and G-Sync.

ASUS has actually singled out the monitor as “competitive-grade”, which means it’s targeted at players of e-sports titles like Dota 2, League of Legends, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The monitor has seen use in actual competitions, and was the official display at ESL One Cologne and The International 2016.

With that in mind, the other specifications of the monitor also start to make sense. It has a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel TN panel – which can seem a little underwhelming in an era of 1440p IPS displays – but is pretty much all that competitive players require (in fact, many professional players play at lower resolutions). That’s because higher resolutions will result in lower frame rates, and these gamers are usually more concerned with squeezing out the highest possible frame rate than making their game look pretty.

And because e-sports titles are generally less demanding to run, which means frame rates could run into the hundreds, a high refresh rate is necessary to capitalize on that and provide a more fluid, tear-free experience. The PG248Q has a native 144Hz refresh rate, but this can be overclocked up to 180Hz. If that isn't high enough for you, ASUS actually has a higher refresh rate panel on the way in the form of the 240Hz PG258Q that we saw at Computex 2016. Finally, the monitor also has a 1ms response time for minimal motion blur.

Other features include support for NVIDIA’s G-Sync variable refresh rate technology, which further helps get rid of tearing and stuttering, and a built-in blue light filter that can be accessed via the OSD menu.

Two USB 3.0 ports provide more options for connecting and charging your mobile devices.

The ASUS ROG Swift PG248Q will launch at Comex 2016 on 8 September at S$899.
