Nokia World 2010 - Reinforcing Symbian^3
Over the years, Nokia World has always been a defining moment for the company. Nokia World 2010 is perhaps one of the most interesting one compared to its various iterations, not for its product introduction, but the days leading up to it. For one, its restructuring into three distinctive units - Mobile Solutions, Mobile Phones and Markets, is indicative of a change in directions and goals for the immediate future. But what really shook the table was the dramatic change of its upper echelon, with the almost simultaneous bowing out of both its CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo and was to be Head of Mobile Solutions Anssi Vanjoki. And of course, the introduction of its new CEO, Stephen Elop, the former head of Microsoft's business division, will bring a fresh perception to the company.
Held in conjunction with its Nokia Developer Summit, the annual event is the platform from which the Finnish outfit formally announces its latest device lineup for the months to come. This year, it's of no exception, though what did surprise us was the absence of a Meego device announcement at this major event. According to David Rivas, Vice President of Technology Platform, this was a decision to focus everyone's attention on the Symbian^3 platform, highlighting the company's ability to deliver four distinctive devices for different consumer segments.
So what was up Nokia's sleeves? Giving his final keynote speech after his 20 year stint with Nokia, Vanjoki officially introduces more devices joining the Nokia N8 as Symbian^3 devices. From its C-series, we have the Nokia C6 and C7, two devices that share a very similar design concept, but distinctly different once we had our hands-on with it later on. And not surprising, we also hear the official announcement of the Nokia E7, which is basically a larger N8 with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Here are the key highlights of these three new devices.
