In the Stars with Samsung Galaxy S II and Tab 10.1

Aligned with the Planets

First glimpsed at the Samsung Unpacked event at MWC 2011, both the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will finally arrive on our shores...soon. They are both a little different from the last time we saw them in the flesh (the latter boasting of physical changes; the former gets a hardware upgrade and exclusive software tie-ups), but let's not dwell too much in the past. Nonetheless, if you do want to check our past coverage out, do click here. Otherwise, check out our coverage below:

Samsung Galaxy S II

The Samsung Galaxy S II has shown itself as a worth successor to the earlier Samsung Galaxy S for a few reasons: a dual-core processor, which got bumped up to 1.2GHz, a thinner profile at 8.49mm from its original 9.9mm and most importantly, an improved Super AMOLED Plus, offering 50% more sub-pixels, thus improving its overall quality. Beyond its hardware improvements, the Galaxy S II will also be preloaded with a variety of apps exclusive to this dual-core smartphone.

And for those who wish to purchase the Galaxy S II, we have some good news. Unlike its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S II won't be tied exclusively to a specific telco and will be available from June 2011 onwards.

Focusing on the software side of things, Samsung also announced a couple of exclusive partnerships for relevant apps and services, including secure online banking and transaction-tracking services for public transportation.

Beside the 4.3-inch HTC Desire HD, the Samsung Galaxy S II's 4.27-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen doesn't fail to impress.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Lest some of you are confused with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, here's what you need to know. What was shown during MWC 2011 has been redesignated as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v, which comes in with a thicker profile and a camera sensor with a higher megapixel count. During CTIA 2011, the Korean chaebol made a surprise announcement, revealing a new tablet that matches the Apple iPad 2 in terms of weight, thickness and even pricing. Henceforth, this new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, measuring in at only 8.4mm in thickness and sporting the same dual-core processor, will be available in Singapore from July 2011. As for its pricing in Singapore, here's the breakdown for the Wi-Fi and 3G versions with various storage capacities:

  16GB 32GB 64GB
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (3G) S$848 S$978 S$1108
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (WiFi) S$668 S$798 S$928

Samsung intends to cater to different user profiles with its 7-, 8.9- and 10.1-inch variations. The 8.9-inch tablet was announced at the same time as its 10.1-inch sibling, but as of now, Samsung has been tight-lipped on its arrival in Singapore.

Placing an iPad 2 by the GalaxyTab 10.1 for reference, we noted that the Tab's 10.1-inch screen is visibly bigger than its 9.7-inch competitor but is also lighter by about 40g.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been shaved down from its original 10.9 mm profile to a slim 8.6mm one - one that is slightly thinner than the iPad 2's 8.8mm profile.

The tablet takes a radical departure from its previously hardy and resilient exterior, showcasing a smooth and minimalistic rear quite like its, ahem, close competitor.

The top is where the action is: faced down from left to right, we have the power button, volume controls...

3.5mm headphone port and a micro-SIM card slot.

A charging port sits at the bottom of the tablet.

We dare not say too much about the tablet's performance as the one in our hands was a prototype, but we must say that the user experience we had was one that was extremely speedy and responsive.

Some compatible accessories for the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 were seen displayed at the Samsung flagship store at Vivocity.

For those anxious to try out the tablet, you can swing by Samsung's store at Vivocity - prototype units will be displayed there for a short period of time for walk-in customers. While the product will not be on sale during the upcoming PC Show, Samsung has made mention that units will be displayed throughout partner booths at the event itself for attendees to take a swing at it. The white version will officially come to Singapore in July, but as to which version - 3G or WiFi -, tablets enthusiasts have to wait for a while longer for the updates.
