A sneak peek at what's coming at CommunicAsia2016

CommunicAsia has been Asia’s longest running true IT exhibition for years (which isn't your usual PC Show, Comex sort of shows that are to drive sales), and this year’s installment brings a renewed focus on how artificial intelligence and smart technologies are changing the way we live and work. Here are some of the more interesting exhibitors that were present at the pre-briefing.

First up was a prototype of a multi-functional kitchen-top device by four Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) students. Called SousChef, the device is able to store recipes and dispense ingredients based on your selection. As you can see in the demonstration below, at the moment it just dispenses the ingredients, but we’re told future versions will allow for automated cooking based on the recipes’ instructions too.

Next there was an app-controlled surveillance robot by Device Electronics. While also still in the prototype stage, the robot was built with the idea of using your old, unwanted mobile phone to act as both video camera and microphone for the device to help with home monitoring. As you can see, the base is fully mobile and can be easily controlled via an app:-

Moving to more industrial applications, Cathay Photo had Taiwan-based Cheng Seng Group’s Freefly ALTA 6 Camera Drone on display. This ready-to-fly system drone weighs about 5kg without batteries, and has a flight time of about 20 minutes with the ability to mount professional level video camera. What’s impressive though, is how much smaller it folds down for storage, as you can see in the video below.

Finally, Expandore Electronics had the latest Kodak Pixpro on display. Tiny pocketable cameras, these capture an extreme wide angle of view, as putting two together (back to back) will give you 360-degree real-time video in up to 4K quality.

Placing two of the PixPro cameras back to back will give you true 360 degree video.

4K in the palm of your hand? The Kodak PixPro is truly small enough to make such a claim.
