SingTel 4G LTE Coverage on SMRT Train Stations
Signed up for SingTel's 4G LTE mobile plan, and a 4G-enabled smartphone but do not know where are the areas with 4G coverage? Well, let's take a look at the various MRT platforms along the major SMRT lines, and see where you can enjoy 4G data speeds.
Overview
When SingTel officially launched its 4G LTE plans for mobile phones on 5th June 2012, it also listed out a roadmap of its LTE network deployment.
Timing | Areas |
June 2012 | Woodlands, Jurong East, Tuas, Bukit Timah, Orchard, City Hall, Shenton Way, Ang Mo Kio, Punggol, Pasir Ris, Bedok, and Changi |
December 2012 | Admiralty, Chua Chu Kang, Jurong Island, Alexandra, Telok Blangah, Sentosa, and Marina Parade |
Early 2013 | Yishun, Lim Chu Kang, Pioneer, and Thomson |
Curiosity got the better of us and we decided to embark on a mission to map out SingTel's 4G LTE deployment based on SMRT's train network. After all, we believe the majority of users will be surfing on their mobile devices while waiting for the trains to arrive. This article will be a guide for 4G subscribers (with 4G-enabled phones) as to where they can switch to the LTE network to enjoy a faster and better web browsing experience.
Before we proceed with the rest of the article, please take note of the following:
- For the purpose of this article, we used the HTC One XL. As the hardware specs differ across the three LTE Android smartphones, signal strength, reception and performance may differ.
- SingTel is currently carrying out its deployment of its LTE network. As such, your experience may differ from ours.
- SingTel's 4G network coverage currently does not extend to underpasses, tunnels and underground MRT stations. Therefore, we only covered stations that are above ground.

Conclusion
Besides Sembawang and Simei MRT platforms, the rest of the stations that are above ground seem to be 4G ready. Having said that, having 4G reception on a particular train platform doesn't necessarily equate to having 4G coverage in the particular area, town or during the journey to the next station.
We've reached out to SingTel on the 4G reception issues faced at the Sembawang and Simei MRT platforms. A SingTel spokesperson commented that the telco is currently investigating the issue with HTC. It is believed to be an intermittent fault.
Apparently, we aren't the only ones facing issues of similar nature. Two HTC One XL users in our forum have reported not getting any 4G signal on their devices even in areas that are supposed to have 4G coverage. As SingTel and HTC continue to investigate the matter, here's a list of troubleshooting tips for HTC One XL users who have difficulties connecting to the 4G network:
- Turning on Airplane Mode for a few seconds before deactivating it
Switching to airplane mode will reset your mobile device's connectivity to the network and increase the chances of connecting to the 4G network when you exit the airplane mode.
- Insert a different microSIM card
Based on our experience during the 4G testing, switching SIM cards can sometimes alleviate the connectivity issues.
- Factory reset
If all else fails, do a factory reset of your device. Remember to backup your important data before carrying out a factory reset.
