Like the other Radeon X1800 XT 512MB cards that we have tested, the test bed was based on an nForce4 SLI motherboard, the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe outfitted with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor and 1GB of Corsair DDR400 RAM in dual channel mode. The hard drive chosen is a Seagate 7200.7 SATA, with Windows XP Professional installed and upgraded to Service Pack 1, along with DirectX 9.0c.

ATI's Catalyst 5.11 was used for all the cards. The Sapphire Radeon X1800 XT 512MB Platinum Edition runs at 700MHz core and 1600MHz DDR, similar to the other overclocked cards in this shootout from ASUS, Gigabyte and HIS. Meanwhile, the normal version of the Sapphire runs at 625MHz and 1500MHz DDR, on a par with the rest of the cards. The following benchmarks were used in this review:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Quake 4
