Samsung's Next-Generation Blu-ray Player

Samsung's Next-Generation Blu-ray Player

Finally, Samsung continues to further improve on its Blu-ray offerings with an update over the previous P1000 Blu-ray set-top player, called the BD-P1200. The kicker of course is whether Samsung continues to stay committed to the Blu-ray format, be it in the CE market or the IT market, since weve been reading conflicting news from various sources online that some manufacturers are now exploring the possibility of going both ways (developing universal players), switching sides or staying put in the same camp. Some manufacturers are also staying put in one camp with core products but developing peripheral products that support the alternative format.

Here's what Mr. Seung II Lee has to say when asked whats Samsung's positioning with the Blu-ray format so far: "Theres been a lot of discussion about Blu-ray versus HD DVD format, with the discussion on a universal player (one that plays both formats) as well."

"From our perspective, we're committed to Blu-ray and that's what we're developing. Ultimately, this is kind of like the VHS versus Betamax format because it's not necessarily the manufacturers who will decide the format but the consumers who pay the money. Theoretically, we can have universal players that support both, but it will increase the cost for consumers and make it more difficult for developers to create content that play on both formats. Who will win out in the end? It's hard to say but for the time being, we are committed to Blu-ray and making it workin the player market."

Samsungs second generation Blu-ray Disc player - the BD-P1200 - made its appearance at CeBIT 2007. Beyond the Full HD 1080p playback support, it has an improved HQV processor for better video quality and better 1080i to 1080p HD de-interlacing, HDMI 1.3 digital interface, support for its Anynet+ HDMI-CEC (one remote controls all) technology, 7.1-channel Dolby Digital plus audio support and an Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.

Well that's it for Part 2 of our Samsung @ CeBIT 2007 coverage. We hope you've enjoyed our showcase of some of Samsung's latest and upcoming CE and IT products at the show.
