The smartphone is Sony’s 2017 flagship mobile device, with a 4K HDR display in a 5.5-inch form factor.
The device measures 156 x 77 x 7.9mm, with the fingerprint sensor built into its power button, just like its predecessors.
Its 5.5-inch, 4K HDR display is compatible with 2160p content found on YouTube. Sony is also working with Amazon to enable HDR content compatibility on the Xperia XZ Premium as well.
Underneath is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor powering the phone. It’s one of the first Snapdragon 835 to be commercially available, along with the Xiaomi Mi 6 and the HTC U11.
Here’s a closer look at the Snapdragon 835 chipset, courtesy of Qualcomm.
In true Sony fashion, water-resistance is rated at IP65/68, and that's identical to the Xperia XZ's rating. The USB Type-C supports Gen 3.1 transfer speeds.
On the rear, you can find a 19-megapixel camera. Despite shrinking the shooter's resolution from 23-megapixels resolution to 19-megapixels, Sony still managed to increase the pixel size of the sensor by 19% (bringing it to 1.22µm).
The rear camera’s memory-stacked sensor enables it to transfer the image scan and data from the top of the sensor to the DRAM at 5x the usual speed (25Gbps). From the DRAM to the processor, however, is still at typical 5Gbps.
Another key feature is Motion Eye, a super-slow motion technique that records briefly at 960fps, and playing back that segment over six seconds at 30fps. You can watch our attempts at Motion Eye here.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium pre-orders begin on 26th May 2017, and it has an official retail price of S$1,098. You can find all the pre-orders details here.
The colors Deepsea Black (from our MWC hands-on coverage) and Luminous Chrome (pictured) officially launches on 10th June 2017, while the Bronze Pink version will only come to Singapore in July.
