MWC 2011 - Doing the NTT docomo

We have been used to seeing some rather interesting smartphones at NTT docomo's booth (quick flashback to last year's CommunicAsia), and this year's MWC saw no exception. Famous for their tie-ins with major fashion labels and tech brands and outwardly quirky exteriors, these Japan-exclusive phones come in all shapes and types, including a Lumix-tie in phone that looks like a camera. While these novelty handsets will never see the light of day on our sunny island, it is always good to have some hope (although, on a similar note, these phones usually come with features exclusive to Japan, for e.g., TV and radio services). Check out our coverage below.

Fashion-oriented phones like these were also previously spotted at last year's CommunicAsia.

The Android-based REGZA Phone T-01C is a multimedia phone with an edge - it is also highly waterproof. A collaborative effort between Toshiba and NTT docomo, the smartphone features the Mobile REGZA Engine 3.0 for hi-def video playback and a 12.2-megapixel camera.

The LYNX 3D SH-03C is an Android-based smartphone that allows users to view 3D content without the need for glasses as well as shoot images in 3D. What we saw were some pretty impressive 3D videos which sadly, cannot be captured properly on our camera. The phone does not come with two cameras, but takes multiple shots with one and gauges the most optimal for the 3D effect. Upgradable to Android 2.2 in spring.

 Part phone...

part "camera", the Lumix phones come with a 3.3-inch touchscreen and a 13.2-megapixel camera at the back. While its front reminded us of an old-school slide-out design, it transforms into a regular camera once you flip it on its back.

Also at the NTT docomo booth, a touchable 3D display is spotted. A sensation can be felt as you touch the screen with the given touchpen though a combination of a glassless 3D display and force feedback function using magnetic force.
