Microsoft releases Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

A.k.a. Windows 10 version 1709

Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for desktops, laptops, and tablets. Unlike the dozer that was the April Creators Update, this fall update is massive.

For one, the Fall Creators Update will bring about more hard-hitting features and user experience improvements, such as better Windows Inking, OneDrive Files On-Demand, an updated Game Mode, a smarter Windows Defender, a vastly improved Edge browser, and several accessibility improvements, such as Eye Control. Many users will also notice for the first time (subtle) design changes fueled by Microsoft’s new Fluent Design in several first-party apps. As mixed reality headsets and motion controllers become widely available, this also marks the beginning of the era of Windows Mixed Reality.

As with previous updates, Microsoft will push out this Fall Creators Update slowly, usually first with newer devices that have been tested and guaranteed to work with the latest version, so don't fret if you don't get yours immediately. A way to jump the queue is to use Microsoft's Update Assistant tool. If you want to blow away your existing installation, or you've more than one machine to upgrade, you can use the Media Creation Tool from the same link to download an ISO and create a bootable USB drive or burn it to a DVD.

For those who prefer to sit out until the day one bugs are ironed out, you can defer the update with the option under Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options. Businesses running the Enterprise, Pro, or Education version of Windows 10 can also hold off the update by selecting 'Current Branch for Business' (as opposed to just 'Current Branch') in the same page.
