HWZ Deal Alert: 5th Oct 2015

Got deal, got talk! GDGT! =)

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t spend time in office shopping online? As tech journalists, we spend a great amount of time fussing over the latest gadgets and sussing out great tech deals. Amazon, Taobao, Qoo10, Newegg and Lazada are but some of our favorite hunting grounds, but if you look hard enough, there’s always a deal to be had. We also spend an inordinate amount of time trawling through the App Store, Google Play and Steam for great software deals.

Since sharing is caring, we’ve decided to handpick a few interesting ones for you, our dear readers. Moving forward, we will be making this a regular feature, so be sure to check back frequently for updates and new deals. Here are a few that have our attention this very moment.

1. Samsung SSD 850 Pro

The Samsung SSD 850 Pro

If you are looking to upgrade your storage, you can do a lot worse than the Samsung SSD 850 Pro. As we found out in our review, it’s blazing fast and has a high level of endurance. In fact, it was dominating in so many areas that we made it the Best SSD at our Tech Awards 2015. Prices of the SSDs have fallen dramatically in the past year or so, and there hasn’t been a better time to grab a new drive for your system. The 1TB Samsung SSD 850 Pro is now available for a very attractive price on Amazon  (S$672 after taxes and inclusive free shipping) and is certainly worth considering for your upgrade or new rig.

2. Overseas portable Wi-Fi router rental

Oversea portable Wi-Fi router rental

Are you traveling soon? Can’t live without a data connection? Changi Recommends is now offering an overseas portable Wi-Fi router rental service to over 20 destinations all over the world. Each portable Wi-Fi router will come complete with an almost unlimited data plan, so there’s no need to worry about finding your own data plan when you arrive at your destination. Just go on and enjoy yourself. And if you are heading to multiple destinations - say a tour across Europe - Changi Recommends also has packages that will allow you to use the router up to 3 countries per trip. The specifications of the portable Wi-Fi router will vary depending on your destination, but each router will offer between five and eight hours of battery life and will be able to support a maximum of eight users simultaneously. And for a limited time period, Changi Recommends is offering rentals from as low as $5 a day. If you are traveling soon, be sure to check out Changi Recommends.

3. Ted Su straps

Honey brown crocodile belly strap from Ted Su.

If you got a smartwatch and want to spruce it up, sure, you could opt for the safe route and go for the “official” accessories from their respective brands. Or you could look elsewhere. Ted Su is a popular strap maker based in Taiwan and has been making straps since 2005 for mainly Panerai owners. They are most famous for their ammo and crocodile straps, but as you might expect, these straps don’t come cheap. However, they do periodically offer what they call “outlet” straps - essentially prototype straps or straps with minor cosmetic imperfections. These straps are considerably more affordable and definitely worth checking out if you are not a fussy buyer.

4. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption

Feeling nostalgic? Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption.

Regarded as one of the best RPG games in 2000 and widely lauded for its then cutting-edge graphics, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (yes, a mouthful) sees you playing the game as Christof Romuald, a 12th century French crusader who is killed and revived as a Vampire, as he goes in search of his lost love. The game is available from GOG.com for just US$1.99 (S$2.84) and the good thing is that because it is so old, the minimum requirements are almost laughable - any decent system can run it.

Well, what are you waiting for?! Get your wallets and cards ready and #BBBMTL!
