HP Innovations Makes Enterprise Faster and More Mobile

As part of its 2014 World Tour, HP has been showcasing a number of innovative new enterprise devices that look set to change how businesses operate, among them, the first fully virtual workstation, and a storage drive HP claims is twice as fast as an SSD.

Z Turbo Drive

The Z Turbo Drive combines PCI-E connectivity with SSD storage.

HP's new Z Turbo Drive SSDs are said to be twice as fast as conventional SSDs thanks to an innovative combination of PCI-E technology and SSD storage. Rather than plug into traditional hard drive slots, the Z Turbo Drive utilizes the PCI-E slot, which provides faster throughput and data transfer, compared to conventional SSDs that run through a SATA bus. The drives, which will initially be available in 256GB and 512GB storage capacities, have a read speed of 1GBps, and will have a price comparable to similar size SSDs.

DL380z Virtual Workstation

The DL 380z offers workstation performance to up to 8 remote devices.

HP has extended its Z Workstation family with a new solution that lets portable devices like a tablet or notebook access high-end computing and graphics power via virtual desktop connection to a powerful workstation.

The DL380z Virtual Workstation is based on the same hardware as HP's ProLiant DL380p server, a 2U rack-mount two-socket system based on Intel's Xeon E5-2600 processors, which will allow it to slot right into existing data centre infrastructure.

Where the HP DL380z differs is that it can be configured with up to two NVIDIA Grid K2 graphics cards (formerly branded as NVIDIA VGX K2), which have been custom made by NVIDIA to support virtualisation technology. HP tells us that two Grid K2 GPUs  is roughly equivalent to one NVIDIA Quadro K5000 Kepler GPU. The DL380z allows up to eight users to be hosted on the system, each with access to a virtual machine with GPU acceleration capabilities.

Remote access is delivered either by operating Citrix's XenServer with its HDX 3D Pro technology, which the HP DL380z is certified for, or by utilising HP's own Remote Graphics Software, and almost any OS and device can link to the DL380z, from Android tablets and Windows Ultrabooks, to thin clients and small form factor PCs.

Pro x2 612 Hybrid Notebook

The Pro x2 612 is the first detachable 2-in-1 device built specifically for enterprise use.

The Pro x2 612 is the first detachable 2-in-1 tablet/notebook device aimed specifically for enterprise use. The 12.5-inch Full HD tablet is powered by an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, runs on Windows 8.1 Pro and has a full set of enterprise security features, including a TPM chip and an optional fingerprint scanner.

It also has Wacom digitizer stylus support, and will be available with two optional keyboards, a Power Keyboard that turns it into a full clamshell notebook with full connectivity options, and a thin and light Ultra Mobile keyboard that is aimed at portability. The Pro x2 612 looks set to challenge Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 for best productivity 2-in-1 tablet this year. For a closer look at the Pro x2 612, check out our dedidcated hands-on article.
