 The printing element of Edgeline technology comprises of a series of overlapping inkjet printheads, each having an incredible count of 10,560 nozzles that spray micro droplets of color ink onto papers.

 The inkjet printheads do not come into contact with paper at all during printing.

Off the bat, the new Edgeline technology differs from existing technologies by having a printhead that does not move at all during printing. There's no traversing inkjet printhead nor is there a contact toner drum in the system. Only the paper is moved, not the printing mechanisms. The clever bit in Edgeline printers is a stationary printing line comprising several contact-less printheads similar to those found in inkjet printers. Because printing is done with several printheads operating concurrently, Edgeline printers are able to spray anywhere between 900 million to over a billion drops of ink per second onto papers that roll underneath synchronously and at high speeds. In contrast, normal inkjet printers could only manage 90 to 100 million drops of ink per second. As Edgeline technology was designed with minimal moving parts, another advantage it brings to the table is a dramatic increase in overall reliability. This in turn translates to lower operating costs as there are fewer things to go wrong and servicing would be minimal as a result.

 Paper gets fed in by a big roller at high speeds underneath the stationary line of printheads. Only the roller feeding sheets of paper moves when printing is underway.

In terms of documented printing performance, the first generation of Edgeline technology managed a maximum printing speed of 71 pages per minute (PPM) during the two-year long intensive testing leading up to the launch of Edgeline technology. To take the groundbreaking technology beyond the laboratory environment, HP has just unveiled the industry's first Edgeline technology-basd Multi-function printer (MFPs): the new HP CM8060C/CM8050 Color MFPs. Most impressive about the printer is that it is equipped with a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium M-730 processor that's paired to 1GB of RAM and a HP Jetdirect Fast Ethernet print server that supports up to 1GB in transfer rate. This set of processing hardware means all incoming jobs could be done processed swiftly, thus allowing the printer to achieve its high printing rate as specified.

"Building on HP's MFP industry leadership, HP is extending our portfolio with new Edgeline color MFPs," said Gary Cutler, Vice President & General Manager, Edgeline Technologies, Imaging & Printing Group, HP. "The Edgeline offerings will transform the industry, providing customers with a multifunction printing solution with unprecedented ease of use that can improve productivity and lower color operating costs by up to 30 percent."

With the announcement of the company's first MFP based on Edgeline Technology, HP is setting its sight at capturing a huge chunk of enterprise printing market that's reported to be worth $147 billion annually. To meet that objective, HP is also staffing up its global sales force and coming up with tools to help customers optimize their printing infrastructure, better manage their environment and improve work processes. Already, there are more than 10 different training events deployed across Asia Pacific & Japan to develop HP's Imaging & Printing Enterprise direct sales team and selected value partners' expertise to sell HP's products, solutions and services. Obviously, at the other end of that equation is HP's suite of inkjet, laserjet and Edgeline powered printers.

"This enterprise market investment and strengthened sales strategy has resulted in our Manager Print Services business' Total Contract Value (TCV) in the region to grow by about 80% year on year in 2006," said Kelly Tan, Vice President, Enterprise Printing, Imaging & Printing Group, HP Asia Pacific & Japan. "Today, we also help to manage over 11,000 single-function and multifunction devices for our customers under HP Manager Print Services contracts in Asia Pacific & Japan. As it was designed from the ground up to be a highly scalable technology, HP acknowledged that downsampling the technology to retail consumer space is a possibility, but only when there is a demand for the technology that current inkjet and laser offerings are unable to satisfy. The total market opportunity for HP Edgeline technology alone is expected to be more than $30 billion by 2009.
