Hands-on: Samsung's Galaxy of Devices

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

A 7.7-inch tablet? Samsung surprises us with yet another device with an odd screen size (Remember the Samsung Galaxy Note?). That aside, the other outstanding thing about this gadget is its HD AMOLED Plus touchscreen and awesomely constructed body. Specs-wise, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 comes across as the more capable of the two new tablets, the other being the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus. This is especially true when you consider the fact that it is the first tablet in Samsung's history to boast of a AMOLED touchscreen and that it comes with a higher battery capacity of 5100mAh in a smaller body. Of course, be prepared to shell out more money for the Galaxy 7.7 as compared to the Galaxy 7.0 Plus.

Samsung's AMOLED touchscreens have always been a main draw for consumers. Combining that (a Super AMOLED Plus screen to boot) with a device that comes with a tablet form factor makes it all the more enticing. Color reproduction is brilliant on the device, boasting of deep blacks and visually popping colors. Physical buttons are nowhere to be seen on the front, which keeps the slate minimalistic and clean-looking, The TouchWiz interface makes a reappearance here; veteran users will know that the UI is simple to use and polished to boot.

The tablet runs on the tablet-friendly Honeycomb OS, which makes surfing and navigation an intuitive affair. There's no official word about an Android 4.0 update yet, but with these specs, we are pretty sure that the Galaxy 7.7 will get it.

Without a doubt, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a thing of sophisticated beauty - especially if you turn it on its metallic back. Nice touch, Samsung.

We cannot emphasize on how slim the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is (hopefully this picture does it some justice). A small microphone pinhole and a 3.5mm audio port can be seen at the top. Stereo speakers and its proprietary jack are found at the bottom.

On the left side, you get a microSD slot and a SIM card slot. These are protected by plastic flaps that are easy to open. Just make sure not to apply too much force into doing so because they are rather flimsy.

On the right side, you can find both the power button and volume rocker. The buttons are a tad too small and thin for comfortable pressing, but we can't expect otherwise given the thinness of its profile.
