Google Nexus 7 Unveiled

A Price War is Imminent

Google Nexus 7 - The World's First 7-inch Quad-Core Tablet

As expected, Google extended the Nexus branding to tablet devices by unveiling the Nexus 7. Equipped with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core 1.3GHz processor and 1GB RAM, the Google Nexus 7 is the world's first 7-inch tablet to be powered by a quad-core processor. Its 7-inch IPS display is strengthened with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

The Google Nexus 7 is also the first tablet to ship with Chrome as its standard web browser. Built in collaboration with ASUS, the Google Nexus 7 is designed to be a very portable multimedia device that allows you to read magazines, watch movies and play games comfortably in your hands.

A recommendation engine is built into the new intelligent widgets, which recommend apps, books and movies based on your interests. According to Google, they "will get smarter and more accurate as you use them". There is a music widget that functions like Shazam - it automatically identifies the song playing on the radio and directs you into the Google Play Store for purchasing.

Making full use of the built-in gyroscope, you can navigate a location on the Google Nexus 7 via compass mode in a 360-degree fashion similar to how it is on an augmented reality app. In addition, these information can be downloaded for offline usage with the latest version of Google Maps shipping alongside the Google Nexus 7. This means that even without an Internet connection, you are still about to find directions using the downloaded maps on the tablet.

The Google Nexus 7 is available in two storage capacities and colors: 8GB, 16GB, white and black. Consumers in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia can order the device starting today and it will start shipping in mid July. Other markets will follow soon.

With the launch of the Nexus 7, Google is officially making its presence felt in the tablet space. Let's see how the Google Nexus 7 fares against some of the notable tablets of its class below:
