The Duel of the Eee PCs: S101 vs 1000H

Inside Out

With both netbooks running on the same Intel Atom platform, the only difference between the new S101 and the older 1000H is the use of a SSD which feels reminiscent of the Eee PC 1000 model, though the S101 lacks in storage capacity compared to both older models with only 16GB (the 1000 has 40GB and the 1000H has 160GB). This really could be an issue for some, but it really does depend on your usage.

The back of the Eee PC 1000H has one large panel that you can open up to upgrade the HDD and the SO-DIMM slot.

It's a pity that the S101 doesn't really have much you can do for upgrading. Unlike the older 1000H, which allowed you to change the hard drive and SO-DIMM, the S101 has only one removable back panel for the Wireless LAN module and the SO-DIMM slot. Technically speaking, you don't really want to swap your Wireless module away, so that just leaves you with the option of changing the RAM. The other alternative would be to open up the entire unit and mod it from there, but we do like to point out that it's not really advisable unless you know what you're doing, of course.

The S101 on the other hand, has only one small panel for you to upgrade the RAM or switch out your the Wireless module for something else (HSDPA possibly).
