A day out with the Oppo N3 - A photo journal

Getting comfy with the Oppo N3's motorized swiveling camera

The Oppo N3 is one of the more unique phablet offerings available right now. Priced at S$849 (although local tertiary-level students are eligible for a $50 discount by showing their valid student ID card at Oppo's Concept Store in Suntec City) the 5.5-inch phablet's star feature is its 16-megapixel, f/2.2 aperture Schneider-Kreuznach lens camera module. Uniquely, the camera module has a motor inside it that lets it automatically rotate to the front for high-resolution selfies. Of course, you probably aren't going to be taking selfies all the time, so we decided to take the N3 out for a day of shooting to see how it fares in different usage scenarios and with different lighting conditions. Here are the results.

The N3's motorized camera makes panoramas easier than ever. Just hold the camera steady and press the shutter button and the motor will pan the camera for you.

Conclusion

The N3 is a capable shooter and performed well in most situations we threw at it. Even without any built-in optical image stabilization, night time shooting with the N3 produced fairly good results with lots of detail and acceptable levels of noise. We were also hard pressed to find any artifacts from software noise reduction. Color reproduction was also reasonably accurate, even in tricky yellow lighting conditions and contrast was consistent throughout, with plenty of detail captured in both the shadows and the sky. The f/2.2 aperture lens is also wide enough to produce some pleasant background blurring (bokeh effect) without having to resort to any software wizardry. The auto-focus was also fast and accurate throughout our testing.
