Connect Four - Taipei Launches 4G WiMax Service

WiMax around the City

WiMax around the City

Taipei currently enjoys 75% coverage around the city, though this is more of outdoor coverage given the way WiMax works. For indoors, it's expected that users will transition to using WiFi instead, though of course, given the proximity to the WiMax base station, users may be able to get coverage indoors too. We were told that by year-end, the city targets to have 95% coverage.

To put the existing 75 per cent claim to the test, Intel gave us a quick tour around Taipei's various landmarks while also loaning us WiMax equipped notebooks to test on the move. Overall, the experience was a smooth one, with reasonable download speeds as far as we could tell. We did encounter a signal drop out once during the ride, but the overall experience was definitely satisfactory for internet junkies (which we are).

We were able to access our new site from Taipei on a bus while traveling around the city.

Like a 3G network, the 4G WiMax was able to cover locations like the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall with very acceptable surfing speeds.

Same goes for a busy area like the Taipei Main Train Station. Seen here is Mr Barry Sum, Regional PR Manager for Intel willingly posing as our model.
