Seagate & Genius Booths

Seagate's Booth

Seagate has been developing some sort of media player storage device that they call the D.A.V.E. (Digital Audio Video Experience). The D.A.V.E. unit uses a 1.8-inch HDD with current capacities of up to 60GB. But, instead of just being a USB store, it can also connect to almost any device via Bluetooth and WiFi. And not only does it store data and media files, you can stream media files off D.A.V.E. to your connected player and will stay connected up to 9.1m away. This was in fact first previewed to key journalists like ourselves in early 2007, but this is the first time it is being showcased in a major show.

Last CES, Seagate showed their first 1TB Barracuda HDD. In this CES, there is no 2TB HDD. Sorry. This CES, Seagate is also showing a 1TB HDD, but is specifically built for high definition DVR devices. The PipelineHD series of HDD is not only designed for large capacity, but to be as quiet as possible and operate at drive case temperatures up to 75 degrees Celsius.

The Maxtor BlackArmor Hardware Encrypted Storage is a portable storage device that provides 'government' grade security for home consumers. The storage encryption used on this thing provides the highest level AES protection from unauthorized access to your private data. Initial capacities are supposed to start at 160GB in Q2 2008.

Ever felt like you want to keep those treasured DVDs for life? Don't trust the small flimsy casing of your portable HDD? In comes SentrySafe, technically a waterproof and fire resistant data storage chest from Seagate to ease your worries.

Genius' Booth

We asked what was new, and Genius had basically two brand new items to check out. The first is their CES Design and Engineering award winning touch panel Bluetooth headset, BT-03i. It features a CSR chipset, CVC (Clear Voice Capture) technology, and has a 30mm audio driver. Battery is slated to last for 6-8 hours with 220 hours of standby.

Genius also has a new 2.1 speaker system they're currently working on, known as the 2.1CH Touch Panel. It features a total 50W RMS output (30W subwoofer, 2x10W satellites. What's new to Genius is a touch activated control panel for power, volume and EQ. While we've already seen similar touch controls on speakers from the likes of Logitech, Genius will bring the same features into a much more value segment.
