App Attack: Homegrown Goodies

Zooming in on Home

It’s not every day that we see apps that were developed right here in our little red dot. While these apps may not often top the global charts, that does mean that some of them are veritable gems buried in the rough – they may even prove to be more useful because of their local focus! In commemoration of the SG50 year, we’ve rounded up a few home-grown apps that we think are worth your attention:

HardwareZone Forums App

Price: Free
Category: Discussion boards
Platforms: Apple iOS / Google Android (coming soon)
When it comes to striking a conversation with other like-minded folks, there's none that rivals the sparkle and depth of information shared on HardwareZone's very own forums. The 17-year old forum has grown to develop a plethora of discussion sections to suit just about every possible topic under the sun - including interactive trading of used goods in the MarketPlace section.

Just recently updated, the new HWZ forums app for iOS users incorporates a new UI, UX, a quick view of the latest discussions at any point of time, a personal messaging function, ability to use your phone's camera roll and other image source options and a forum activities tab to easily keep track of discussion threads you've browsed or replied recently.

Page Advisor

Price: Free
Category: Business
Platforms: Apple iOS / Google Android

We’re all familiar with the convenience of e-commerce, but when it comes to intangible services for hire, we often have to go the long route of calling up the company in question. Page Advisor changes that by allowing users to engage service providers and view merchant ratings via the app. Users fill up details pertaining to the job request, after which they will receive multiple quotes minutes after submitting the request.

Payment is made by credit card within the app itself, which does away with the hassle of cash or check payments. Page Advisor has agreements with up to 1,400 businesses in Singapore, and over 100 different services are already available on the app.

Chope

Price: Free
Category: Lifestyle
Platforms: Apple iOS / Google Android

Friday nights are great, but it can be quite a hassle to jostle with other diners in securing a reservation. Chope makes your life easier by allowing you to make online reservations instantly in the app itself. You are almost certainly always with your phone, and Chope makes things really convenient by placing information like address, opening hours, price, reviews and even pictures at your fingertips.

The app even features menus and recommended dishes from its food writers and the occasional promotion! Furthermore, it’s a great way to discover new eateries, and now you can reserve a table without even leaving the app or needing to make any calls.

NewsLoop

Price: Free
Category: News & Magazines
Platforms: Apple iOS / Google Android

There are many great news aggregator apps out there, but it’s often difficult to find one that will give you a comprehensive overview of regional news. Newsloop just does that, bringing together the best of local and international news stories from over 600 publishers in the Asia Pacific region. You can choose from over 30 categories of news and lifestyle topics to personalize your own newsfeed and stay updated on the topics that matter to you.

You’ll even be able to sync your newsfeed across multiple devices via a NewsLoop account. Furthermore, you can create up to 10 profiles on a single account to better manage the glut of information out there.

Trezo

Price: Free
Category: Lifestyle
Platforms: Apple iOS / Google Android

Whether you’re looking to buy or sell either brand new or pre-loved items, Trezo wants to be your go-to app. With clearly-labelled categories like men’s fashion, gadgets and IT, and sports and outdoors, you can quickly navigate to the right section that you need.

It’s also easy to speak to sellers in real-time, so you can quickly get a sense of who you’re dealing with. If you’d like to sell something of your own, it’s easy enough to create an item listing and upload a photo. You’ll also be able to upload your own profile along with a short description to help distinguish yourself from other users.
