Sony is rumored to have a brand new sensor in the works, which will employ a completely new way of sampling color information to allow it to get more resolution out of each sensor.
Now's a pretty interesting period for digital compact cameras. As sales of point-and-shoots continue to slip, I was sure the compact was going the way of the dodo. Surprisingly, we're actually seeing more variety and better quality as camera manufacturers have chosen to focus their efforts on putting out enthusiast-level cameras.

HTC's RE camera is a big departure from the company's usual offerings. The tiny handheld 'lifestyle' camera is armed with a 16MP f/2.2 lens and a single shutter button for photos and videos. HTC unveiled two new devices in New York today, both aimed at photography enthusiasts. The HTC Desire Eye smartphone features 13MP rear and front-facing cameras and is loaded with software to help you take better pictures, while the RE Camera is a new tube-like 16MP camera designed for quickly taking high-resolution snap shots and video.
The top of the compact camera segment has been dominated by Sony's CyberShot RX100 series for the last two years, but with Canon's new PowerShot G7 X that also boasts a compact frame with a 1-inch sensor and all that you expect out of Canon's prosumer series, including ease of use, it seems Sony has just met its toughest challenger yet.
