Whatsapp Reports Having 400 Million Active Monthly Users

Social network platforms and services like to tout user numbers. Just recently, Kik Interactive boasted that it has 100 million users while Line said a month ago that it has 300 million. These figures refer to registered users and not active ones, and when quizzed about the number of active users, both companies declined to comment.

Now, Whatsapp CEO Jan Koum has stepped in and said that their app enjoys 400 million active monthly users, of which 100 million joined in the last four months. To put this number in perspective, this is more than the number of active monthly Twitter users.

“We want to steer the conversation to be about active users, not registered users,” said WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum. “We’re a bit fed up and frustrated about people talking about registered users. We think it’s important for us as a leader in the space to speak up and be ethical.”

Other interesting statistics include its users sending 16 billion messages and 500 million images each day.
