Specifications of Top-End AMD 'Hawaii' R9 290X GPU Leaked

The specifications of the top-end AMD 'Hawaii' R9 290X GPU have been leaked ahead of their planned launch next month. This new 28nm GPU is based on the company's 2nd generation Graphics Core Next microarchitecture. It is expected to compete with NVIDIA's GK110 graphics processor.

The new R9 290X GPU allegedly sports a 430 mm squared die, which is eighteen percent larger than the Tahiti XT from the Southern Islands. Its base clock is rated at 900MHz, and it sports a total 2816 stream processors that is spread across 44 clusters. It is 37.5 percent higher than the Tahiti's count of 2048.

Based on the block diagram of the Hawaii GPU that was leaked last month, it  confirms the presence of four independent raster engines that could possibly "double the geometry processing muscle", when compared to the Tahiti XT chip that has only a pair of raster engines. The memory bus interface is expected to be 384-bit, and the chip will sport 176 Texture Mapping Units (TMUs), compared to the 128 TMUs of the older Tahiti XT.
