Flipboard 2.0 Allows Users to Create Own Magazine

Flipboard has revealed a major update to version 2.0 -- only available on iOS for now -- that allows Flipboard users to create and curate their own private or public digital magazines with content that's easily found in Flipboard or the web. This new magazine function signals the app's shift from simply offering content discovery, to giving users an opportunity to interact with, and share the content they come across on Flipboard in an easy and visually appealing manner.

This new magazine function allows regular users, businesses or professional publishers to come up with their own content that targets a specific niche. Besides the magazine creating feature, Flipboard has also partnered up with Etsy to create a visually attractive catalog that comes with an integrated shopping cart, so users can instantly make purchases without leaving Flipboard. According to All Things D, the new update with new features, indicates Flipboard's need to figure out a way to monetize its business.

There should be some fun stuff created to keep users flipping on the service, but it’s clear the offering is also a lot about finding more revenue for the startup. Using specialized magazines, for example, publishers can instantly create one-offs of previously published content — from Vanity Fair’s “Royal Weddings” to Martha Stewart Living’s “Home How-Tos” — and presumably sell advertising against it.

Since it has remained independent so far despite some big acquisition interest, figuring out a solid business plan is important, especially since Flipboard did a massive $50 million fundraising round that valued it at $200 million two years ago.
