Independant analyst firm Canalys has just revealed market share numbers for Android. According to the data for Q1 2013 that Canalys collected, 59.5 percent of the estimated 308.7 million smartphones, tablets and notebooks out in the market, were running Google's Android operating system (OS). This means that Android maintains its smart device market share dominance in Q1 2013, while Apple (with 19.3 percent ) and Microsoft (with 18.1 percent) stay in second and third place respectively. According to the report, Apple still leads in tablets market share with a 46.4%market share. However, the data shows that it has been bleeding market share to Android for the third consecutive quarter.

"Spearheaded by Google and Amazon, the commoditization of the tablet market has happened far quicker than that of the wider PC market,’ said Canalys Senior Analyst, Tim Coulling. "Profit margins are being squeezed and vendors without a low cost structure will find it hard to compete."
