AMD Prepares for "Hawaii" Graphics and More

After a long slumber, it looks like AMD is going to make some pretty strong headlines if the hype building up around their AMD "Hawaii" GPU is true.

While we can't really divulge information until details are officially made known tomorrow morning, what we do know is that the new discrete graphics cards codenamed "Hawaii" are true and that it will be launched next month. This is certainly a big deal especially when AMD's last big announcement in GPU technology was 1.5 years ago with the "Tahiti" GPU cores that debuted with the Radeon HD 7900 series. Of course there have been updated and additions to the family such as the Radeon HD 7790 and the less than spectacular Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU card (that was better executed and delivered by ASUS and PowerColor - with a six-month lead time to market), however those weren't big headliners.

But it's not all just about the hardware as we were briefed by Raja Koduri, Vice President of Visual Computing at AMD. Standing atop the foothill of Diamond Head Crater in Hawaii, he was clear in his messaging that software plays as much as importance as the hardware bits and what matters is the overall combined experience. Koduri is definitely not talking PR with the tech media - he's a veteran in the graphics industry from the days of S3, ATI and AMD where he delivered a number of breakthroughs in graphics technology in his career. As such, we await eagerly to find out what's in store for us tomorrow morning when AMD unveils its new plans for the future of computing and gaming. As a tidbit of sorts, he briefly dangled a carrot with mentions of improved CrossFire experience, which we don't doubt as he invented CrossFire for AMD back in 2005.

AMD's VP of Visual Computing, Raja Koduri (right), delivered his opening speech at the Diamond Head Crater, Hawaii to kick start the AMD GPU14 tech media conference with special emphasis on improving both hardware and software to deliver the ultimate visual experience. More details to follow soon.

HardwareZone is now at Hawaii where AMD will be sharing to the tech press more details of what's coming our way. So stay tuned for more updates; for the hardcore AMD fans, here's a the link to the live stream tomorrow.
